    Music: The Format

So, The Format. One of my favourite bands. If you're from Arizona you almost undoubtably know who they are, if you arent... I don't know? I'm not sure if they're very popular outisde of AZ, but they have an almost cultish following here (although I saw Dog Problems on a list of the best albums of 2007, so I guess they're probably pretty popular).

They're fabulous. One of few bands I can name whose second album was as good or better than their first; the way they construct songs is completely unique. AND they make albums - as in, you can listen to them the whole way through on repeat because all the songs are amazing, and they work together amazingly, which isn't something many bands do anymore.

    Songs you should listen to:

Give It Up (acoustic version) - The song during which I realised I love them madly. The song of all my high school fears - being to cowardly too ever leave this town, stagnating here.

On Your Porch - Song of my junior year, song of growing up and moving on. "Now it's time to get out of the desert and into the sun, even if it's alone"

Dog Problems - Song of yay and texture. "I'm at a loss, you were my tangerine"

The Compromise - Song about the music industry, both catchy and snarky.

Note, Music, To Read, Maybe Read

I'm going to be avoiding fandom for a while - probably until this semester is over, so for about a month and a half - so that I can focus on my acedemics. I've been doing... worse than I ever have done so far this semester, and I can't afford (literally, the only reason I can even take classes is my scholarships) to fuck up my GPA. So as soon as I finish cleaning out my tabs, I'll probably only post once or twice 'til December. Expect a couple of rec posts tomorrow.

Music I uploaded in the last few days:

    Songs
Afro Celt Sound System - Even In My Dreams
Bitch & Animal - Feminist Housewives
Damien Rice - Creep (radiohead cover)
Dandy Warhols - We Used to Be Friends
Deep Blue Something - Breakfast at Tiffany's
    Eve 6 - Inside Out
    Gin Blossoms - Hey Jealousy
    Hole - Awful
    Imperial Teen - Freaks
    Massive Attack - Risingson
    M.I.A. - $20
Modest Mouse - The Stars are Projectors
    Nena - 9 Luftballons
No Doubt - A Simple Kind of Life
    Old 97's - Question
Peaches - Boys Want to Be Her
Pixies - Where Is My Mind?
    Rilo Kiley - 15

What She Can Have by [info]redsambuca
    William-centric, TAI
Bill is a transgirl. He thinks.

He's in a fucking Walmart, of all places. The bus is stopped at the gas station at the other end of the strip mall. It's late, the rest of the guys are sleeping, but Bill is here, in the cosmetics aisle, baseball cap pulled down tight, shielding his eyes.

As though anyone here cares who he is, anyway.

He knows he's being paranoid. No one's gonna recognize him, not here, not this late. Here he's just anyone. Just another guy.

Just another guy, in the cosmetics aisle, deciding between Candy Coral and Pink Pearl.

We're Alone Now [And I'm Singing This Song For You] by [info]megyal
    Pete/Patrick

The doctors said it was anterograde amnesia, where new events were not recorded in Pete's long-term memory, but Patrick broke it down fo rhimself, and it meant Pete's life simply stopped at twenty-seven. On top of all the things Pete had to deal with, he would face the world forever young. For a person with a Peter Pan complex, Patrick thought, this was the worst irony ever. The thing about Pete, though, that being naturally unstable and not quite sane, Patrick wasn't too sure from day to day how he would take this information.

ryhme "girl" with "girl" by Gale ([info]iphignia939)
    Trish/Peyton, Girl!AU

Ten minutes into talking to Trish, Peyton has decided they're going to be best friends until they die, mostly to annoy Trish. It's kind of like being seven years old again, jumping up and down and yelling "PAY ATTENTION TO ME!" while her parents focused on the new baby in the house. Except, you know, without the baby. Also, she's in college.

Twenty minutes into talking to Trish, Peyton has decided she's going to get her into bed by the end of the week, maybe sooner if she can manage it. Trish wrinkles her nose when she laughs, and she has a strong speaking voice that she automatically tones down to make it softer, more feminine. Ten bucks says she's a screamer.

Half an hour into talking to Trish, Peyton convinces her that yes, she's a good drummer-- not great, Andy's better, but pretty good -- but maybe she could sing something?

"I don't sing," Trish says automatically, wincing a little.

Peyton stares at her from her perch near the head of the bed, playing with a small stuffed turtle. "Humor me," she says.

Trish shrugs. "Okay," she says, and clears her throat before launching into Saves the Day's "Through Being Cool".

She'll never be able to figure it out down to the exact moment, but somewhere around the second verse, Peyton realizes she's in love.

    Pete/Patrick

Pete's list of dudes who were straight before they met Patrick has 52 names on it, including about half the dudes on Decaydance, most of the other half not counting because they'd been pretty gay already, like Ryan, Spencer, William, and Pete himself.

    Customer Service by [info]rain_dances
    Pete/Spencer, Department Store AU

“So let me guess,” Spencer says, “Your blender mysteriously exploded again?”

“Nope. Blender’s fine. My toaster doesn’t work anymore. I think I broke it.” Pete’s eyes are all wide and falsely innocent, and Spencer can’t help but smile a little. He quickly turns into a scowl.

“Really. Didn’t you just buy that toaster three weeks ago.” It’s not a question, because Spencer knowswhen Pete bought that toaster, because Spencer sold it to him. Spencer has, in fact, sold Pete every appliance known to man in the past three months.

“What can I say, I make a lot of toast,” Pete grins, leaning on the counter. “And bagels. I love bagels. With cream cheese.” Spencer’s not sure how Pete manages to make talking about bread products sound really dirty, but he does.

    Music: Music For Your Vagina

I did the most fabulous thing last night - I attended a vagina health party.

It was so exciting! We learned about vaginas and orgasms and sex -- clinical terms and common experiences and the variations between individual vaginas. Some fabulous women showed their vaginas - we saw cervixes (hmm, how do you pluralise that?)! It was totally empowering and bond-making and FABULOUS.

I am so IN LOVE with women (especially activists)! Powerful women, women who know themselves, and women who are trying to find themselves are fabulous and beautiful and inspirational and so fucking awesomely sexy. Vaginas are awesome and beautiful and NOT DIRTY (fuck you, patriarchy).

I am OVERFLOWING with love for womankind.

    So... I made a mix!

Happy Belated Natoinal Coming Out Day! Today I am came out as a feminist, vegitarian, genderqueer, socialist, marxist, nerd, pansexual activist! What would you like to come out as?

    SPN related

I saw SPN 3.01 a couple of days ago, and. GUYS. Sam's little nose. HIS LITTLE FACE! HIS GINORMOUS FREAKING SELF. I swooned, seriously. Or, I made flailing hand motions and squealed a bit, and my sister laughed at me. I did have some race/gender concerns, which. Yes. There's a rant there, but I really just... don't feel like typing it, so. I'm sure someone else already has. And now I must download 3.02 -- I never get to be home for supernatual this semester because we have feminist meetings then. *sigh*

Actually, here is the race side of the rant (scroll down to #5), by [info]technosage. I'm sure some other rant is more... ranty. But this is the one I read, so this is the one you get.

    Bandom related

Last night I got to see Rilo Kiley in concert, which was pretty cool (lots of lesbians, yay!), but the band that opened for them, grand ole party, was really fabulous - show-wise and sound-wise. The lead singer, this totally cute chick, was ALSO THE DRUMMER. It was possibly one of the weirdest stage setups I have ever seen. Not only that, but she was an adorable girl drummer with RYAN ROSS* MAKEUP AND HAIR and a paisley shirt. AND the boys harmonized. It was FABULOUS.

Also, I almost typed 'seen' as 'scene' just now. Thank you, bandom.

We'll Be Falling In Love (Under the Boardwalk) by [info]txtequilanights
    Justin/JC; subplot Lance/Chris, Joey/Kelly, and Britney/Wade
THEY ALL WORK ON A BOARDWALK AND JC HAS PINK SHIRTS AND THEY ARE GAY. AND THERE IS A PSYCHIC IN A YELLOW HOUSE. THIS STORY IS MADE OF WIN.

JC's alarm goes off at 7:00 on Monday morning and, right then, he kind of hates his life. It doesn't help that when he finally manages to fight his way out from under the covers and stumble out of his bedroom and into the kitchen, his roommate is already there, making coffee and bopping along to the radio. Country music, because Lance is nothing if not from the South. The first thing he said to JC when they met was, "Hi! I'm Lance! I'm originally from Mississippi."

JC had said, "Um, okay?" and thought it was really lucky that Lance was hot. Because he was the biggest dork JC had ever met.

Hmm, started this yesterday... don't really feel like finishing. Happy morning y'all!

Have you ever read a story - short, long, whatever - that just makes you bawl? And you're crying, and you can't stop but the story ISN'T EVEN SAD, not really, its just... *flaily hands* Something. Something important. Good, maybe.

    I don't know.

Bandslash: Stories sitting open in my tabs

your love is gonna drown by Marianna ([info]mariannafic)
AU. The author lists the pairing as Spencer, Brendon, so I'm going to go with that. It is slash, though. There is no one quote that will do this story justice. It is fabulous and amazing and makes my heart hurt. You should read it.

It Sounds Different When You Say It by [info]jae_w
    Spencer-centric

Spencer thought that maybe this was why people started smoking, fo rsomething to do when there wasn't anything else to do or say, for something to pay attention to when you didn't want to pay attention to what you were really doing. Smoking would kill you, of course, but so would moments like these. A little slower than cigarettes, maybe, but then again maybe not.

just jealous 'cause we're young and in love by [info]imogenedisease
    Brendon/Zach, Jon/Spencer, AU

Brendon has decided he's in love. "I'm in love, Spencer," he declares, but quietly, because they're in class, and Mr. Davis is kind of mean.

"Oh?" Spencer says, muffled against his arm, head on his desk.

"Zack is amazing," Brendon says. "I want his babies."

"I wish Ryan was here," Spencer says. "Or like. I wish you weren't."

"That's not nice," Brendon says. He tries to doodle his initials and Zack's, but he doesn't know Zack's last name, so it ends up looking like BBU <3 ZACK. He think it looks good anyway.

Hmm, it's all panic!fic today. Weird, considering that I usually don't read very much of it at all because I have a hard time understanding people's fascination with Ryan Ross and Brendon Urie. I did have a dream about Spencer once, though.

Oh, and sorry for spamming today, guys. Obviously not sorry enough not to do it, but. You know.

Somersault on the Sawdust by [info]gigantic
    Frank/Patrick

"So you get drunk and believe in life after love?"

"Ha! No, no," Frank says, bending close to tuck his mouth against his arm on Patrick's shoulder momentarily. His smile is no dimmer when he pulls back, "No, I go way before that. I'm very old school. You got me and, baby, I got you."

Patrick hums the next bar, cutting himself short when he realizes he's doing it. He says, "Wow, see? You barely mention a tune, and I take off with it. I think -- I'm gonna take a guess here, dude, and say I'm drunk. I should go sleep it off."

"Nu huh, look at me," Frank says, and Patrick widens his eyes as he obeys. Frank laughs, says, "Relax," and smiles slowly when Patrick does, surveying him. "Yeah, you're wasted."

    Stress Relief by [info]violentfires
    Frank/Patrick, College AU

Every note has a frequency, a cycle, a compression of a specific volume of air; these are all key concepts Patrick learned before he even arrived at Rutgers, before he chose his double major of music and physics, before he signed over his life and his very soul to studying. At 3:21AM on a Tuesday, halfway through the second semester of his third year, Patrick learns that he does in fact have a breaking point, and he can physically hear himself rushing toward it, in the hollow swell of blood that pumps through his ears, and the way his fingers go slowly numb.

    Polaris by [info]ink_like_blood
    Frank/Patrick, AU

“If you’re still looking for a guitarist, I might have a lead though.”

Bob was grinning when Patrick turned around. “You can lead with that next time, motherfucker.”

Bob smiled. “You remember Pencey Prep?”

Patrick’s internal music encyclopedia was extensive, but it still took him a while to land on the obscure Jersey band. “They had a big song last summer, right? Something about waves? I think the bridge had this chord change –“

“Most people would just say ‘oh, yeah, the guys who looked like trailer trash in ties’, but yeah. They broke up. I teched afew Midwest shows for their tour and keep in touch with some of them. I think the guitarist moved out here. Could be something.”

Get Into The Car and You Aim It At The Sun, Boy! by [info]one900
    Frank/Patrick

On the last chord of their closer, he throws off his guitar to a rush of feedback and distortion and skips down the steps of the stage, pouring Evian onto his scalp (and this is testament to how far they've come, he's able to use Evian to wash away sweat). He turns and raises his hand in acknowledgement when Gerard yells, "Yo, you're fucking crazy, Frank," with a wide grin.

Then someone else says,"Hey." Someone who's leaning against a cross-hatched steel beam about five paces ahead of Frank: a short kid with a jean jacket, sunglasses, and a newsboy cap. He nods at Frank; Frank shows his teeth in a saliva-coated smile and the guy smiles back.

"I'm Patrick," he says. And then, with a lopsided grin, "So, what the fuck, do you buy new gear for every stop on the tour or what?"

Cold as Ice Cream by [info]redsambuca
    Frank/Patrick, ice cream shop AU

“The usual?” he asks, and Brendon nods, grinning.

Patrick turns to the case and slides it open. He grabs a clean scoop and digs it into the tub of rainbow sherbet. He drops three big scoops into a plastic bowl, then sprinkles a generous handful of M&M's on top.

“Can I have a sugar cone on the side?” Brendon asks, leaning over the counter to watch Patrick work.

“Sure,” says Patrick, grabbing one and sticking it firmly into the sherbet. “That's $5.50. And you're disgusting, by the way.”

Brendon grins again, reaching into his pocket. “You say that every day.”

But Sweeter by Dira Sudis ([info]dsudis)
    Brendon/Ryan
So, Dira is an author I have loved in multiple fandoms (which seems to be a theme with my bandslash recs, but. That's how it goes, I guess.). She's really pretty fucking fabulous, and this story had me practically falling out of my seat laughing. And I should maybe warn for mormon food? It's kind of scarring.

The part that didn't make sense, at first glance, was the spoon.

Patrick Stump does Sock Puppet Theater for the kids, and Pete Wentz is a kid. At heart. Shut up, it totally counts.

Moments When You Can't Deny What's True by [info]nafs

    Patrick Stump/Nick Carter

The only reason Nick even picks up the first phone call is that it's his manager's number on the display. When it's not Johnny's voice on the line, he's reminded that they hired Johnny back because he's a devious motherfucker. Which was also why they fired him in the first place.

    "Hey Nicky, how's it going?"

Nick is a professional. He is a professional and he knows how to hang on to his temper under extreme provocation. This is why he manages not to hang up on this person that Johnny seems to feel he needs to talk to.

"Who is this?" He's not professional enough to be polite under the circumstances.

    "It's Pete Wentz."

So maybe y'all know -- if I wanted to find, say, some more bandom/popslash crossovers, where might I look? Because that would be mostly awesome.

    Music/Poetry recs
I'm in a poetry kind of mood today, so

    here, have some poems

    Flockprinter by Buddy Wakefield

And I am rumble motion jawbone
    waterlogged with ink spots
    smiling ear to ear
armed with backbone and busted zoo gates
    promising You
from the bottom of my harmonica pocket
    forever--
You will never have another lonely holiday.

    Even now,
where the assignment is to live without a destination,
I end up with You and the rain, released.

    Pretend Intro by Buddy Wakefield

And since this is my belief system, I'd like to offer that
if you don't believe what I believe
maybe tonight after the show, your family and my family could get togehter and have a WAR

it's very popular right now, I don't know if you've been watching the news.

    Pretend by Buddy Wakefield

pretend you live for a living
pretend inside your skin you've got a friend who's willing to give you everything you ever wanted, in exchange for all you've ever been
pretend you're more obsessed with this moment and a little bit less with the way it may have ever been done before or will ever get done again
and for a moment on fire pretend in front of me is a plywood lemonade stand with a sign on the front that reads "i've got no more lemons, just my opinions"
yours for a dime a dozen today, and
they're always going to be on the table, y'all, but only some are going to set you free

    Subtle Sister by Alix Olson

sometimes anger's subtle, less rage than sad
leaking slow, thorugh spigots you didn't know you had
    and sometimes it's just
    fuck you
